Research:
The aim of research in Dr. Mohraz’s group is to understand and exploit colloidal interactions, chemistry, assembly, and response to external fields to design microstructured materials with enhanced functionality for composites, biomimetic applications, alternative energy, and environmental remediation. In bottom-up assembly approaches, the interparticle interactions are controlled by manipulating both the geometry and surface chemistry of colloidal building blocks for the desired application. In top-down approaches external stimuli are implemented to guide and manipulate the material’s microstructure into the desired form.

Current projects in the Mohraz group involve both fundamental and applied elements of colloid synthesis and surface modification, microfluidics and interfacial phenomena, guided- and self-assembly, and characterization of structure and dynamics by quantitative confocal microscopy and light scattering.
