IEEE Awards Ayanoglu for Service in Communications

Feb. 1, 2024 - Ender Ayanoglu, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, received the 2023 Joseph LoCicero Award from the IEEE Communications Society for sustained exemplary service to the organization’s electronic and print publications. The IEEE chooses one awardee per year who contributes heavily to the editing and publication of its journals.

The IEEE is the largest technical professional organization worldwide dedicated to advancing humanity through technology, and the Communications Society focuses on advancing networking technology and creating innovative ways to share information globally.

Ayanoglu’s research focuses on wireless and optical communications, as well as the design and optimization of broadband communication systems. He became an editor for the society’s flagship journal IEEE Transactions on Communications in 1993. He served as the editor-in-chief from 2004-08, and is now a senior editor. In 2015, Ayanoglu was appointed editor-in-chief for a special series on green communications and networking within a larger IEEE journal. Based on the series’ success, he proposed and received approval in 2016 to convert it into a periodical, the IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking (TGCN).

“Today, TGCN has its second editor-in-chief after me and is a thriving journal,” said Ayanoglu who now serves on TGCN’s steering committee. “This award is particularly special to me because Joseph LoCicero, who is no longer with us, appointed me as an editor of Transactions on Communications and later trusted me as the editor-in-chief.”

Additionally, Ayanoglu served for 12 years on the IEEE Communications Society Communication Theory Committee, received the Stephen O. Rice Prize Paper Award and Society Best Tutorial Paper Award and was named an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer in 2022-23 and recently in 2023-24. He is also an IEEE fellow.
