Internal UCI Competitive Fellowships (Typically Offered Each Year)


ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation, Inc.

  • Deadline: Late Summer/Early Fall
  • Must have achieved a graduate level UC GPA of 3.7 or better
  • Must have completed at least 2 years (3-4 years preferred) of full-time graduate study at UCI, with 2 years remaining.
  • Must be making satisfactory progress toward degree goal
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have identified their individual area of research interest and be willing to prepare a poster board of their research for display at the awards dinner
  • Must have exhibited excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities during their academic program

Brython Davis Fellowship

  • Deadline: Early November
  • M.S. or Ph.D.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • One of the applicant's parents must currently be, or have been, a regular member of either the United States Navy or Marine Corps

Chancellor's Club Fellows

  • Deadline: Early November
  • Plans to complete their Ph.D. degree soon
  • Has a minimum graduate-level UCI GPA of 3.7
  • Be advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree
  • Shows financial need (provide a statement)
  • Be willing to prepare a poster board of their dissertation research for display at a Chancellor's Club dinner or other function
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities
  • Be willing, if requested, to speak during a Chancellor's Club or other meeting regarding their research and career plans

Faculty Mentor Program (FMP) Fellowship

  • Deadline: Early April
  • Nominees must be current UCI Ph.D. students who are in the pre-advancement stage of their program, and must not be at the dissertation stage during the tenure of the award.
  • Nominees must demonstrate high potential and promise.
  • Nominees must indicate an interest in an academic career in teaching and research.
  • Nominees must be United States citizens or permanent residents.
  • Nominees must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Students must enroll full-time in 12 units during each quarter of fellowship tenure.

Fletcher Jones Fellows

  • Deadline: Early September
  • Shows financial need
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities
  • Has a UC GPA of 3.8 or better
  • Has advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D.

Graduate Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship

The Graduate Dean's Dissertation Fellowship is not available for the 2012-13 academic year and may not be available in future years.

  • Deadline: Late April
  • Full-time Ph.D. students nearing the completion of their dissertation
  • Academic merit
  • Need for release from non-research related employment.
  • Realistic expectation that the student is near degree completion.
  • Doc 2A students are eligible, but will receive no further university support after receipt of this award.

La Verne Noyes Fellowship

  • Deadline: Early November
  • M.S. or Ph.D.
  • The applicant must be a United States citizen who is a blood descendant of a United States Army or Navy World War I veteran, who served for at least four months prior to November 11, 1918, and whose military service was terminated by death or an honorable discharge.

  • The nominee must be a citizen and resident from a Latin America country with preference for students from Colombia.

Phi Beta Kappa Alumni International Scholarships

  • International students must be nearing end of Ph.D.
  • Candidates should be returning to their home country soon after earning their degree.

President’s Dissertation Year (PDY) Fellowship

  • Deadline: Early April
  • Nominees must be current UCI Ph.D. students who are in their last year of graduate study and who have advanced to candidacy by the time of their nomination.
  • Nominees must prove they will be able to file their dissertation by the summer dissertation filing deadline at the end of the award year. Financial penalties will be imposed on the program/school if fellows do not file their dissertation by the summer filing deadline at the end of the award year.
  • Nominees must be within their academic program’s normative time-to-degree.
  • Nominees must not have previously received dissertation funding from any source in support of a final dissertation year, or during the tenure of this award.
  • Students in Doc 2A status are not eligible.
  • Nominees must qualify as a diversity student as defined by the University of California
  • Fellows are required to present a seminar on their dissertation research twice during the award period.

Public Impact Fellowship

  • Deadline: Early November
  • Maintain UCI GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Be a current, full-time doctoral student who has advanced to candidacy
  • Conduct research that has critical public impact
  • Be willing to have research spotlighted/featured on both the Graduate Division’s and UCI’s website, brochures and social networks, and be able to effectively communicate and discuss their research in lay terms with prospective donors, legislators and/or their staff, and the media.
