SURF-IoT Seminar: Future of Computing - Perspectives on Internet of Things (IoT) & Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)

Calit2, Room 3008

ABSTRACT: The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to revolutionize fields ranging from health care to manufacturing to personal living, by connecting the Internet to physical things. Moreover, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are providing more sophisticated embedded real-time controls for application areas, e.g. transportation, smartgrid, etc. This talk will discuss how scaling of semiconductor and communication technologies is playing the major role in transforming the computing and communication paradigm. In the first part of the talk, Professor Al Faruque will discuss how these new technologies are helping to instrument everything around us to be intelligent and connected for better decision making (the new paradigm of IoTs). As an example case study, he will demonstrate his current project together with Professor Pai Chou on indoor localization using IoT devices. In the latter part of the talk, he will discuss how physical systems are controlled by the highly scaled deeply embedded computing system in real-time more accurately for better energy efficiency and reliability. Al Faruque will showcase a specific research from his group, where he will demonstrate how embedded computing systems(controllers) may help building next generation electric vehicles for better energy efficiency to solve range anxiety for the commuters and for maximizing battery lifetime to avoid expensive battery replacement cost.

SPEAKER BIO: Mohammad Al Faruque is currently with the University of California Irvine (UCI), where he is a tenure track assistant professor and directing the Cyber-Physical Systems Lab. Professor Al Faruque served as an Emulex Career Development Chair during October 2012 till July 2015. Before, he was with Siemens Corporate Research and Technology in Princeton, NJ. His current research is focused on system-level design of embedded systems and Cyber-Physical-Systems (CPS) with special interest on model-based design of software-integrated (multi)-physics systems, multi-core systems, real-time scheduling algorithms, etc. Al Faruque received the 2015 UCI Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research, the 2015 Hellman Fellow Award, the 2015 DAC Best Paper Award, the 2009 IEEE/ACM William J. McCalla ICCAD Best Paper Award, the 2008 HiPEAC Paper Award, and the 2005 DAC Best Paper Award Nomination. Besides 40+ IEEE/ACM publications in the premier journals and conferences, AlFaruque holds three US patents.
