Samueli School Distinguished Lecture: Athina Markopoulou on Measurement and Analysis of Mobile and Social Networks

Thursday, May 7, 2015 - 4:00 p.m. to Friday, May 8, 2015 - 5:55 p.m.
Calit2 Auditorium and Atrium
4 pm - Presentation
5 pm - Reception

ABSTRACT: The majority of Internet traffic today is due to mobile devices, video content, and social media. Large-scale measurement and analysis of mobile and social networks are thus necessary to understand the underlying patterns and to enable engineering optimizations and new applications. In this talk, I will present an overview of these trends and highlights from research in my group in this area. First, I will consider online social networks. I will summarize our work on sampling techniques and their use to study properties such as user attributes and network structure. I will also describe our recent results on the reverse problem, namely efficient algorithms for constructing synthetic graphs that exhibit target properties, and their applications to simulation and anonymization. Second, I will consider cellular network activity in urban environments. We collaborate with mobile network operators to obtain and analyze their call-description records (CDRs) in order to characterize user activity in several cities, with applications to car-sharing, urban ecology and network provisioning.
Third, I will discuss content delivery to mobile devices, and ways to optimize the use of wireless access bandwidth via cooperative schemes and cross-layer optimization of cellular and social networks.

BIO: Athina Markopoulou is an Associate Professor in EECS at the University of California, Irvine. She received a diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1996. Athina Markopoulou attended Stanford University where she obtained her master's and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1998 and 2003, respectively. She has served as a postdoctoral fellow at Sprintlabs (2003) and at Stanford (2004-2005), a member of the technical staff at Arista Networks (2005), and visiting faculty at IT University of Copenhagen (2012-2013). She received the Henry Samueli School of Engineering Faculty Midcareer Award for Research (2014) and the NSF CAREER Award (2008). She has been an Associate Editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (2013-2015), and the Director of the Networked Systems program at UCI. Her research interests are in the broad area of networked systems including network measurement and modeling, mobile and social networks, network coding, and network security.
