Research:
Dr. Haroun works in the area of structural and earthquake engineering and is specifically interested in the seismic performance of materials for civil structures, such as bridges.
His most current research focuses on the development and testing of a fiber-reinforced polymer composite material for decks, which can be used in bridges and overpasses. The material was tested in Summer 2001 on the Schuyler Heim Bridge in Long Beach, Calif. The experiment tested the load capacity of the new, plastic-like material, which the California Department of Transportation is using to replace the bridge deck.
Dr. Haroun also is interested in the seismic performance of masonry-infilled frames which are retrofitted by fiber composite. He has published research on large amplitude liquid sloshing in seismically-excited tanks, and on the suppression of environmental-induced vibrations in tall buildings by hybrid liquid column dampers ñ objects that regulate the flow of wind to control reverberation
