The Henry Samueli School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

Program description:

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Fellowship provides funding for exceptionally promising junior or senior engineering students who wish to participate in a quarter of advanced research with a faculty mentor. The program offers students the opportunity to become immersed in a research topic for a half-time, ten-week period. The Samueli School will provide matching funds up to $1,500 (for a total of $3,000) to support faculty-sponsored research.  School funds go directly to the student.  However, matching funds can be used to support student research, pay lab fees, or go directly to the student.  

Eligibility:

  • Junior or senior engineering students
  • Enrollment (or are eligible for admission) in UC Irvine's Campuswide Honors Program OR are already enrolled in the Samueli School Accelerated Masters program
  • Students must have completed one quarter of undergraduate research to be eligible 

Application Requirements:

  • Completed Undergraduate Research Fellowship Application  
  • A confidential letter of recommendation from the current faculty research advisor.  At the end of the letter of recommendation, faculty members must state the amount of matching funds, origin of funds, and how the funds will be used (e.g. supplies, chemicals, consumables, lab fees, salary support, etc.)
  • One-page research proposal
  • Deadline:  Friday, December 4, 2009 for Winter 2010 Fellowship Applications

Program Requirements:

All Henry Samueli School of Engineering Undergraduate Research Fellows must complete a one-page progress report due the seventh week of their funded academic quarter. 

Fellows are required to present their research at the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, organized by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and in the Samueli School’s Annual Industry Research Symposium in May. 

Undergraduate Research Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis by the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Student Affairs.
