Dr. Tsai is interested in micro- and nano-scale photonics, magnetic and ultrasonic devices and materials

Dr. Tsai's current research activities focus on three areas: silicon-based photonics, magnetic film-based microwave devices, and MEMS-based Ultrasonic Nozzles for Biomedical Applications.

Research in the area of silicon-based photonics is concerned with current-injection light sources, resonance cavity enhanced integrated photodetectors, and single-mode fiber-nanowaveguide couplers with potential applications in silicon-based integrated optic communications, signal processing and sensing systems.

Research in the area of magnetic film-based microwave devices is concerned with conception and realization of magnetically tunable wideband integrated microwave band-stop and band-pass filters using YIG-gallium arsenide (GaAs) and iron (Fe)-GaAs layer structures. The resulting devices are aimed at potential applications in wideband optical/microwave communication and signal processing systems.

Work in the area of MEMS-based ultrasonic nozzlers involves utilization of MEMS-based technology for construction of MHz integrated ultrasonic nozzles for atomization and spray to produce monodisperse micro- and nano-particles with potential applications in biomedicine, micro-electronics and materials processing.
