Civil and Environmental Engineering Scholarships Benefit Six Outstanding Undergraduates
Six exceptional undergraduates majoring in civil or environmental engineering recently won financial support or bookstore credit, thanks to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Affiliates and The Henry Samueli School of Engineering.
The Freshman Scholarship
Brian Olson '05 and Marisa Lyn Turner '05 won The Freshmen Scholarship for their outstanding academic achievements in high school as well as their future potential in civil and environmental engineering. Each received a $1000 credit at the UCI Bookstore. Olson, originally from Simi Valley, graduated high school with a 4.3 GPA. Turner, a national merit scholar, also graduated with a 4.3 GPA.
The Jan Scherfig Scholarship
This year Julie Manson '04 won the $1,000 Scherfig scholarship, which was established in recognition of Jan Scherfig, emeritus professor of civil and environmental engineering. Manson, a sophomore with a 3.7 GPA, also belongs to the UCI cross country and track teams. The Scherfig scholarship requires applicants to be CEE majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0, among other criteria.
Gary Guyman Scholarship
Much like the Scherfig Scholarship, the Gary Guyman Scholarship was created to honor a CEE emeritus professor. This year the scholarship was awarded to two students, Ghada Hamza '03 and Lydia LaPoint '03, who split the $1000 award. Hamza, a junior with a 3.7 GPA and a five-time Dean's Honor List recipient, is currently double majoring in environmental engineering and civil engineering. LaPoint, a junior with a 3.67 GPA, is studying civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation and structures.
Robin Sheperd Scholarship
This year's winner of the Robin Sheperd Scholarship, and $1,000, was Joseph Osorio, who holds a 3.1 GPA. A fourth-year double major in civil and biomedical engineering, Osorio plans to pursue a graduate degree in engineering. Like the Guyman and Scherfig scholarships, this scholarship honors an emeritus professor of civil and environmental engineering.
