Federally Funded Fellowships

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

  • Deadline: Varies in November
  • Applicants must be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
  • Applicants must be in a research-focused Master's or Ph.D. program in an NSF-supported field
  • Applicants must be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution
  • Applicants must have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent)
  • Applicants must meet all other eligibility requirements as set forth in the current Program Solicitation

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide

  • Deadline: Early February
  • Applicants must be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
  • Applicants must be in a research-focused Master's or Ph.D. program in an NSF-supported field
  • Applicants must have completed at least one year of their graduate program at the time of application
  • Applicants must be enrolled at U.S. institutions, making satisfactory progress towards their degrees, and have fulfilled all GRFP reporting requirements

NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program

  • Deadline: Early February
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens (permanent residents are not eligible).
  • Students may apply at any time during their graduate program. All applicants must have a University Faculty Research Advisor (who will be the Principal Investigator of the GSRP Training Grant) from the institution where they plan to receive their graduate degree.

NASA Harriet G. Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship Program

  • Deadline:
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizen
  • Applicants must be a member of an underrepresented group, which includes women, ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline
  • Applicants must either be within the first 3 years of a graduate program at an accredited, U.S. university OR be in the process of applying to an accredited STEM graduate program. Note: Persons who have advanced to doctoral candidacy are in-eligible
  • Minimum 3.00 GPA
  • If selected, students cannot participate in any other federally-funded fellowship or scholarship program

Department of Defense National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program

  • Deadline: Mid-December
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizen
  • Applicants must be in: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Biosciences, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer and Computational Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • Applicants must be in their first year of their graduate studies or starting 2nd year of graduate studies
  • Fellowships are awarded only to applicants who intend to pursue a doctoral degree

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

  • Deadline: Early January
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Applicants must be full-time first year PhD student at an accredited U.S. university. Note: Second year graduate students are no longer eligible

Department of Energy STEM Graduate Fellowships

  • Deadline: Early January
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizen
  • Applicants must be first year or second year Master’s or Ph.D. student
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student
  • Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing graduate study and research in areas of fundamental research supported by the DOE Office of Science

Department of Homeland Security Graduate Fellowships

  • Applicants must be working toward a Ph.D. in an academic institution
  • No limitations have been placed on citizenship.

National Park Services George Melendez Wright Climate Change Fellowship Program

National Physical Sciences Consortium Graduate Fellowship in Science and Engineering

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizen
  • Applicants must be in first or second year of a graduate program

UC Natural Reserve System Mildred E. Mathias Graduate Student Research Grants

  • Deadline: Early October
  • Applicants must be enrolled at a UC campus other than UCSF while conducting their research
  • Studies must be conducted on reserves in the Natural Reserve System or at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park or White Mountain Research Station

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

  • Deadline: Early November
  • Applicants must be a New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of naturalized citizens if born in this country).
  • Applicants must be not yet 31 years old
  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree and cannot be beyond second year in the graduate degree program

SPIE Educational and Travel Scholarships

  • Applicants must be a member of SPIE
  • Applicants must be enrolled in electrical engineering
