Challenges in BNR/ENR Treatment Plant Design

Abstract:
The presentation will discuss challenges in the design and operation of biological nutrient removal (BNR) and enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) wastewater treatment plants.  Challenges discussed will include accurate modeling of these plants, microbial populations including nitrification, phosphorus accumulating organisms, foaming, the attainment of stricter standards, including organic nitrogen (as rDON) issues, design enhancements including alternative carbon side-stream treatment, resource recovery, sustainability issue and resource recovery and sustainability issues. Case studies for cold and warm weather conditions will be discussed.

About the Speaker:
Paul Pitt is vice president and leader of the process engineering group at Hazen and Sawyer - Environmental Engineers and Scientists. For more than 20 years, he has been working on process engineering and biological nutrient removal. After obtaining his Ph.D. at Berkeley in 1987, Pitt worked for the City and County of San Francisco until 1998. He then moved to his current position. His expertise includes biological process modeling, nutrient removal, selector technology, and foaming control.
