State support for public universities continues to shrink; state funding now covers less than 24 percent of UC Irvine's total budget. Therefore, we must depend increasingly upon the philanthropy of private individuals, corporations, and foundations to enable development of the facilities, programs and student support to levels of excellence that will continue to distinguish this School and region.
